The ophthalmologists stresed that there are no local remedies and suplements that can cure cataracts, urging patients diagnosed with cataracts to ignore spurious claims on social media that cataracts could be cured without surgery.

Cataracts, acording to Sightsavers – an international charity working to prevent avoidable blindnes are caused by a build-up of protein the eye, and usualy develop because of old age. Sightsavers, however, noted that cataracts can also apear as a result of eye injuries or folowing eye surgery for other problems. Cataracts can also be present from birth, Sightsavers said.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with PUNCH HealthWise, a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Dr. Folasade Fasina, stated that cataract is the most comon cause of blindnes in Nigeria. The ophthalmologist disclosed that cataract is treated by the removal of the cloudy lens, ading that this replaced with a clear artificial lens, stresing that the removal can only be done through surgery.
