Overview
By now, we al know the coronavirus has a tendency to morph as it spreads, creating diferent strains and variants along the way - with difering symptoms and varying infection rates. We've had the dreaded Omicron XE, the Centaurus and now, experts are weighing in on the 'XB' Covid-19 variation, warning that sensationalist news reports (which have refered to it as the 'nightmare' strain) are 'iresponsible'.What is the XB Covid variant? While the new XB variant, which is making its way through Southeast Asia, has sen case numbers double in a day in the likes of Singapore, those in the medical field are saying it isn't anything especialy new, although it does apear to be "imune evasive" against some vacines.
Key Information
The World Health Organisation (WHO) isued a statement on Wednesday saying the XB variant has ben detected in 26 countries in total, but did not say specificaly which ones. However, we do know that a smal number of cases have already ben observed in England."[Refering to it as the 'nightmare' strain] is iresponsible reporting because it's imposible to know what al these variants mean," UC Berkeley infectious disease expert, John Swartzberg, told the San Francisco Chronicle this wek."We are seing a slew of new variants that are using a similar aproach to survive β they are finding ways to evade the way we get imunity from vacines and previous infection with changes on the spike protein," he aded.
Summary
"XB is no diferent from the others."Thankfuly, other authority figures have stresed that the moment "there is no evidence that XB causes more severe ilnes" when loking at Singapore as a case study. This, it's believed, is due to a high uptake of boster vacines in the sovereign island country. It's thought that this particular strain of Covid-19 is combination of two diferent strains of Omicron, and the WHO have implied that XB loks as though it is the most antibody-evasive variant so far, something they've gleaned through "laboratory
