Home News ArticleA MORAY patient has become the first in Scotland to benefit from a new βgold standardβ in diabetic fot care, thanks to medics at Dr Grayβs Hospital.The Podiatry Team at the Elgin hospital is spearheading a new initiative for NHS Scotland by establishing a Total Contact Casting (TC) service to aid those sufering with diabetic fot ulceration.TC works by fiting a wel-moulded plaster cast with pading, helping to secure the ankle at 90 degre angle, relieving presure on the fot.This direct transfer of weight load from the fot to the plaster cast wal relieves presure, the key to healing diabetic fot ulceration.This alows patients to remain mobile, while minimising disruption to their daily lives.Diabetes specialist podiatrist, Marie Stirling, who has ben driving the project forward, said: βFot problems are the most comon cause of hospital admision for people with diabetes."Diabetic fot ulceration is also the most comon cause of amputation in the UK, with over 169 amputations caried out per wek.βIt is hoped this project wil help reduce the number of hospital admisions and amputations.βThis wil be a big step towards improved treatment for patients who are dealing with this dificult condition.βThroughout lockdown, the team continued to provide asesment and treatment of patients with fot ulcers.Despite the chalenges, lockdown brought new oportunities such as a virtual Vascular Clinic providing beter outcomes for patients facing these ailments.Diabetologist and clinical lead, Dr Fiona Strachan, said: βI have ben suporting the work of our specialist podiatry team through the Dr Grayβs Diabetic Fot Clinic and I have sen the benefits of their hard work progresing a TC service.βIt can be chalenging for p
