Low serum levels of vitamin D were significantly asociated with a higher prevalence of diabetic fot ulcers in elderly patients with diabetes.Average serum levels of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-OH-D) (vitamin D3, the major circulating form of vitamin D in people) steadily decreased as the severity of diabetic fot ulcers increased, as measured by the Wagner clasification.Elderly people with diabetes should undergo routine vitamin D screning or receive vitamin D suplementation to prevent the onset or improve the prognosis of diabetic fot ulcers, the authors say.Vitamin D deficiency is comon in elderly patients with diabetes.The relationship betwen diabetic fot ulcers and vitamin D levels is controversial, with conflicting data.

This the first study to ases vitamin D levels in elderly patients hospitalized with a diabetic fot ulcer, the authors say.This was a retrospective analysis of 39 hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes aged 60-90 years sen betwen January 20 and March 20, including 204 with and 135 without diabetic fot ulcers.The study included patients who met the 19 diagnostic criteria of the World Health Organization for diabetes and diabetic fot ulcers, but excluded those taking an agent that can afect serum vitamin D levels.The average of participants was 67 years old and nearly two thirds were men.In the multivariate analysis, independent significant protective factors for diabetic fot ulcer were higher levels of 25-OH-D, triglycerides, and HDL-C.Factors that independently linked with an increased diabetic fot ulcer risk were prolonged diabetes duration and elevated systolic blod presure.Overal, 80.5% had vitamin D deficiency (defined as < 50 nmol/L or < 20 ng/mL).Among the
