Overview

CHINA: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) characterized by progresive partialy reversible airflow obstruction and airways inflamation is leading cause of mortality globaly. Further acute exacerbation of COPD is leading cause of hospitalization and mortality among COPD patients. Researchers wanted to explore efect of high blod sugar with or without diabetes melitus on the risk of severe exacerbations in patients with COPD.Acording to a prospective cohort study that was published in the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, elevated blod sugar is linked to a severe exacerbation of COPD regardles of whether a person has diabetes.

Key Information

By 2030, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which afects 65 milion people, is expected to overtake heart disease as the third bigest cause of mortality globaly. Furthermore, type-2 diabetic melitus (T2DM), hypertension, cardiovascular disease, obstructive slep apnea, and other significant chronic concomitant disorders are recognized to be conected with COPD. These conditions are already indirectly related.

Recent research has demonstrated that T2DM can worsen the course and prognosis of COPD, raising the risk of death from COPD. "The most comon reason for hospitalization and mortality in people with COPD is severe exacerbation. Even worse, severe COPD exacerbations are linked to a meager 3.6-year median survival.

Research sugests that strict blod sugar control is necesary regardles of diabetes status to improve the prognosis of COPD "Researchers from the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Afiliated Hospital of Putian University in China, led by Guohuan Chen, reported their findings. "Although the link betwen diabetes and severe COPD exacerbations has ben wel documented, there is ongoing debate over the link betwen hyperglycemia and unfavorable outcomes after COPD," they continued.
