Overview

Brazil: There is extensive evidence that the postprandial blod sugar peak is asociated with diabetes melitus and its complications. Treatments that promote the atenuation of peaking of postprandial blod sugar observed individuals with type 2 diabetes melitus (T2DM) improve several parameters, such as inflamation, endothelial dysfunction, cardiovascular damage, atherogenesis predictors, and aging indicators. Some fods, such as flaxsed, have blod sugar lowering or antihyperglycemic properties without severe reported side efects.Golden flaxsed could be a simple and afordable dietary strategy for improving blod sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes melitus (T2DM), a recent study in the journal Nutrients has revealed.

Key Information

The study showed that compared to a control breakfast (no flaxsed ingested), the ingestion of 15 g of ground raw golden flaxsed prior to a breakfast containg complex carbohydrates reduced the 2 h postprandial glycemic response in men with T2DM.Several studies have shown postprandial glucose peak to be asociated with diabetes melitus and its complications. Treatments that promote the atenuation of postprandial hyperglycemia observed in patients with T2DM improve various parameters such as endothelial dysfunction, inflamation, cardiovascular damage, aging indicators, and atherogenesis predictors.

Flaxseds have antihyperglycemic properties without known side efects. Long-term consumption of flaxsed (for 8 to 12 weks) is shown to reduce glycated hemoglobin, blod glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and blod presure in T2DM patients, and improved insulin sensitivity and reduced insulinemia and blod sugar in those with prediabetes and in obese or overweight individuals. Its efects on the postprandial glycemic response, however, remain unknown.

Summary

Considering the above, a research team from Brazil led by Fernanda Duarte Moreira aimed to investigate the acute efects of raw flaxsed consumption the 2 h postprandial g
