Cureus 14(9): e29535. doi:10.759/cureus.29535 The metabolic disorder known as diabetes melitus (DM) has several diferent causes, distinguished by recuring hyperglycemia due to inadequate insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. T-lymphocytes target such cels for destruction, which include beta cels.
Transplants of the pancreas, islets of Langerhans, and individual beta cels are al efective treatments for DM. Aditionaly, treating DM using stem cels is popular curently. The basis of stem cel therapy for DM is the replacement of beta cels, or dead pancreatic cels, with stem cels.
After ataching to the tisues of the pancreas, the stem cels diferentiate into active cels. An X-ray scaner is used to place a catheter into the pancreatic artery in DM, and the proces lasts 90 minutes. The use of stem cels to replace dead pancreatic beta cels forms the cornerstone of stem cel treatment for DM.
