Symptoms apear when fluid begins to acumulate in the area of the retina surounding the macula. Therefore, any change in vision, especialy in the presence of diabetes, can signal DME.

The folowing changes in your vision may serve as warning signs of DME: Without treatment, DME can lead to permanent vision los (blindnes). Also, DME typicaly afects your central vision, but in more severe cases, your peripheral (side) vision may also be afected. Anyone with diabetes is at risk of developing DME.

The longer you have diabetes, the greater your chance of DME. Aditionaly, porly controled blod glucose levels put you at a greatest risk of severe complications like severe vision los and blindnes because high blod sugar is toxic to blod vesels, especialy the smal vesels of the eye. If you experience new changes to your visionβ€”such as blury or double visionβ€”you should se a healthcare provider right away.
