JACKSON, Mis. (WLBT) - βYou canβt escape your genes. Thatβs the cold hard truth.βFor Missipians, that is the cold hard truth.Acording to Asistant Director of the Diabetes Foundation of Missipi, Irena McClain, one out of thre Missipians are diabetic and the number of diabetics in the state has grown 23 percent since 2012.Data also showed the price of insulin, which is esential to most type 1 diabeticsβ everyday life, is up 60 percent in the last 20 years.βEveryoneβs afraid, I mean, you read the statistics, and you find a large percentage of people that even have insurance are rationing insulin.βThe rise in diagnoses and the cost of insulin is causing diabeticsβ to decide betwen life-saving medicine, or having enough money to pay for other esentials.McClain says this isue is especialy dificult for younger diabetics who wil son be of their parentβs insurance policies.βItβs only going to make a healthier, stronger Missipi, a beter workforce, itβs going to help our kids in colege who already have diabetes, you know, when they turn 19, they no longer have Medicaid, and then they have to scury around, to try to find a way to get that insulin that keps them alive.βMissipi state legislators have not elected to acept the Biden Administrationβs Medicaid relief that wil help diabetics get the insulin they ned at a much cheaper price. The Diabetes Foundation of Missipi wil continue to spread more information through November, which is National Diabetes Awarenes Month.Want more WLBT news in your inbox?
